Tuck, Gather and Roll

gathered sample

This workshop will explore methods of making fabric structures using primary sources as inspiration.

Techniques considered will be tucks, gathers and rolled fabric. Inspiration for structures may come from looking at the natural world – seed pods and fruits, flower shapes or shells. Alternatively, other cultures or examples from a historical source may be the starting point.

AIMS:

  • to consider the potential of manipulated techniques to create form
  • to use primary sources to develop designs for structures
  • to explore material characteristics to develop form
  • to consider methods of joining units together

By the end of the course students will have an understanding of design considerations for dimensional structures, will have a range of samples of tucked, gathered and rolled fabric and will have developed ideas to realize a small vessel or structure.
